The current intake at Riverside Drive is vulnerable to drought — during the 2007–08 drought, the Normandy Reservoir dropped to 42% capacity. The new infrastructure will create a more drought-resilient water supply for the entire region, including the downstream communities that purchase from Columbia P&W: Maury County Water System, Spring Hill, and Mount Pleasant.
Columbia Power and Water System draws its water supply from the Duck River at the Riverside Drive intake in Columbia — up to 20 million gallons per day. Columbia also sells treated water wholesale to Maury County Water System, Spring Hill Water Department, and Mount Pleasant Water System. Mount Pleasant supplements with natural springs south of the city. The Duck River at Columbia is monitored in real time by the USGS (station USGS-03599500).
For most Columbia homes: (1) A whole-house activated carbon backwashing filter ($1,400–$4,500) addresses disinfection byproducts throughout the home. (2) An under-sink reverse osmosis system ($600–$2,000) removes PFOA, nitrate, and chromium-6 for drinking and cooking. (3) A water softener ($2,500–$4,500) handles Duck River limestone hardness (9–11 GPG typical) to protect appliances and eliminate hard water's daily effects on skin, hair, dishes, and laundry.
Mount Pleasant draws primarily from natural springs (lower organic content) supplemented by purchased Columbia water. This results in lower bromodichloromethane (3.79 ppb vs Columbia's 5.08 ppb) and fewer total contaminants (10 detected vs 20). However, TTHMs (44.9 ppb avg 2025) and HAA5 (47.7 ppb avg 2025) remain elevated. Mount Pleasant has fewer EWG exceedances (7 vs 10) and represents a slightly better water quality profile compared to pure Duck River surface water utilities.
