What We Actually Audit

Most homeowners sign water treatment contracts without knowing three things: whether the system is sized correctly for their specific water chemistry, whether the price is in line with the Middle Tennessee market, and whether a simpler solution would solve their actual problem. We check all three.

System fit for your zip code
We cross-reference the proposed system against the verified contaminant and hardness profile for your specific utility or well area. A 64,000-grain softener quoted for a Nashville address at 5.88 GPG is oversized. A carbon-only system quoted for a Spring Hill WD customer with PFOA above EWG is incomplete.
Example: Franklin WD bromodichloromethane is 100x EWG. An NSF 42 carbon pitcher filter is not a solution.
Price against the Middle Tennessee market
We maintain a reference range for common system types installed in Middle Tennessee, cross-referenced by system capacity and brand tier. A $6,500 quote for a residential water softener in Nashville needs explaining. We’ll tell you whether yours does too.
Example: Under-sink RO installed in Nashville should typically run $600–$2,000. Above $3,000 warrants scrutiny.
Technical specifications vs. marketing claims
We check whether the system’s certifications and media specifications match the claims in the quote. “NSF Certified” means nothing without the specific contaminant list. We’ll verify whether the certification covers what they said it covers.
Example: A salt-free “softener” certified for scale reduction does not reduce GPG hardness. At 12 GPG in Murfreesboro, that matters.
Long-term cost of ownership
We calculate the annual filter replacement, salt, and maintenance cost based on the system proposed and your household size. A low installation price with proprietary $350/year cartridges is often more expensive than a higher-upfront system using commodity media.
Example: Some brands lock you into proprietary cartridges. We’ll flag whether local installers can service what you’re being sold.
Sequencing and completeness
Water treatment systems must be installed in the correct order. An iron filter after a softener destroys the softener. UV sterilization before carbon can reduce UV dose effectiveness. We verify the proposed system is sequenced correctly for your water problem.
Example: Well owners with iron above 1 ppm being sold only a softener are being undersold a system that will fail within 2–3 years.
Whether you actually need it
Sometimes the honest audit result is that your current water is better than the sales pitch suggested. Nashville MWS had zero violations in 2025 and zero PFAS detected. A homeowner quoted a $4,000 whole-house PFAS system for Nashville city water may not need one.
Example: La Vergne Water System confirmed no lead in its entire distribution system (2025 CCR). A lead-removal pitch to a La Vergne customer is worth questioning.

Red Flags in Water Treatment Sales

These are the patterns Tennessee Water Authority sees most frequently in quotes submitted for audit. If your quote contains any of these, submit it before signing.

Scare tactics without verified data
“Your water is extremely dangerous” without a specific lab report to back it up. All Middle Tennessee municipal utilities were in full EPA compliance as of their most recent CCRs. Water above EWG guidelines is not the same as dangerous water.
Ask: “Can you show me my utility’s most recent Consumer Confidence Report?”
“NSF Certified” without a contaminant list
A certification number alone tells you almost nothing. Ask which contaminants the system is certified to reduce. A filter certified for lead may do nothing for TTHMs, PFAS, or nitrate — the actual concerns in your utility’s water.
Ask: “Show me the specific contaminant list covered by this certification.”
Salt-free conditioner sold as a softener
TAC (template-assisted crystallization) conditioners reduce scale adhesion but do not remove calcium and magnesium from the water. They do not lower your GPG reading. At 10+ GPG in Murfreesboro, Smyrna, or La Vergne, they are not equivalent to a properly sized softener.
Ask: “After installation, will my water test at a lower GPG hardness reading?”
No Performance Data Sheet available
Any reputable manufacturer makes their Performance Data Sheet (PDS) freely available. It shows actual measured contaminant reduction under laboratory conditions. A company that can’t produce one is relying on marketing rather than data.
Ask: “Can you email me the Performance Data Sheet for this specific system?”
Proprietary cartridges with no local alternatives
A system that requires a $350/year proprietary cartridge available only from the manufacturer or their dealers locks you into a recurring cost you can’t shop around. Calculate the 10-year total before comparing installation prices.
Ask: “Can any licensed local water treatment contractor in Middle Tennessee service this system?”
Oversizing for your specific water
A 64,000-grain softener for a Nashville address at 5.88 GPG with two people is oversized — and priced accordingly. Proper sizing is based on your GPG hardness multiplied by daily water usage, with a safety margin. Oversizing is not a problem, but overpaying for it is.
Ask: “How did you size this system for my specific household and water hardness?”

The Homeowner’s Bill of Rights

Five things every Middle Tennessee water treatment company should tell you during a sales appointment — and rarely do.

1.
Your utility’s specific water test results — not a generic scare sheet
A reputable company should hand you your utility’s Consumer Confidence Report or specific EWG data for your address and walk you through what it means. If they’re showing you a generic “tap water danger” sheet without utility-specific data, they haven’t done the work.
2.
A written explanation of how the system was sized
Softener grain capacity, RO membrane GPD, and whole-house carbon tank volume should all be calculated from your actual GPG, household size, and daily water usage — and they should be able to show you that math. “This is what most people get” is not sizing.
3.
The 10-year total cost of ownership, not just the installation price
Every system has annual operating costs: filter replacements, salt, UV lamps, service calls. A responsible quote includes this in writing. The installation price alone never tells the complete financial picture.
4.
Whether a local independent contractor can service the system
You have the right to know whether the system you buy can be serviced by any licensed Middle Tennessee water treatment professional, or whether you are locked into one company’s service network. This affects long-term cost and your protection if the company changes its service model.
5.
An honest answer to “Do I actually need this?”
A trustworthy water treatment professional should be willing to tell you if your specific water profile doesn’t require the most expensive solution they offer. If the answer to every customer’s situation is the same $6,000 system, that’s not water treatment advice — that’s a sales script.

Yes. If you don’t have a quote yet, describe your primary water concern and your zip code. We can tell you what type of system would make sense for your utility’s water profile, what it should typically cost in the Middle Tennessee market, and what questions to ask before you get any quotes. Some homeowners find this more useful than an after-the-fact audit — it helps them shop from a position of knowledge rather than responding to a sales pitch.
Submit the form anyway. Tennessee has a consumer protection law that typically provides a 3-business-day right of rescission for door-to-door and in-home sales contracts. If your audit reveals a significant issue with the system proposed or the pricing, you may have the option to cancel. We will note in our response whether any issues we identify rise to that level. Even if you are outside the rescission window, understanding what you purchased helps you make informed decisions about maintenance and future upgrades.
The ranges reflect typical installed prices from Middle Tennessee water treatment professionals as of June 2026. They are based on standard residential systems from established brands. Premium or commercial-grade systems, complex multi-component installations, difficult access points, or proprietary brands may justify higher costs. The ranges are a starting point for evaluation — submit your specific quote for a more precise assessment against your system’s specifications and your zip code’s market.
A reputable Middle Tennessee water treatment company should be able to: (1) show you your specific utility’s Consumer Confidence Report and explain which contaminants are relevant to your address, (2) explain in writing how they sized the system for your household, (3) provide a Performance Data Sheet for the system they’re recommending, (4) give you a clear answer on annual operating costs, and (5) confirm that local licensed contractors can service the system independently. If a company deflects any of these five questions, that is meaningful information.
